Is There A Cure For Colon Cancer?

Colon cancer is one the most frequently diagnosed and treated types of cancer in the world. An estimated 3 to 5 % of the world's population will be diagnosed with colon cancer. Nearly 15 % of all cancer deaths in the United States come from colon cancer. It would then make sense that our medical community would be highly focused on healing colon cancer, right?

The term colon cancer is actually used to describe either colon or rectal cancer. Nearly all cases of colon cancer begin on the inner surface of the colon or rectum, developing from adenomatous polyps. The likelihood of the polyp becoming cancerous is usually related to the size of the polyp, with larger polyps being more likely to be cancerous.

The cells in these polyps, when they become cancerous, basically reproduce wildly, with no control or boundaries. This unchecked reproduction is common to all forms of cancer, coming from damage to the DNA of the cells.

While colon cancer can produce symptoms such as rectal bleeding, explained loss of weight, constipation or diarrhea, abdominal pain, etc. Too frequently, however, colon cancer produces no symptoms until the tumor has metastasized to other parts of the body. When a tumor metastasizes, it grows and spreads to areas outside of its original area.

The standard treatment procedures for healing colon cancer are the same for most types of cancer: slash, poison and/or burn.

The most common choice is to slash, through surgery. When caught at an early stage, while the cancer is still in a localized area, the cancerous portions are removed surgically. Surgical treatment is designed to remove the cancerous cells entirely from the body. The chances of doing this are actually fairly slim, because it’s impossible to know exactly how much cancer there is in the body. Most colon cancer deaths occur after the original tumor is removed surgically, because the cancerous cells remain and develop into tumors again. Knowing this, the general treatment is to poison the body after surgery, in an attempt to prevent such recurrence.

The poisons of choice, chemotherapy, are chemicals which destroy replicating cells. Because cancer cells reproduce at a faster rate than the average cell, the plan is that the poison will kill the cancerous cells before it kills the patient. However, there are hefty side-effects and dangers to the patient, even when the chemotherapy is “successful.”

Another option is burning, through radiation. A highly focused radiation beam is aimed at the cancerous area, with the intention of killing the cancer cells while minimizing collateral damage. The collateral damage, in this instance, refers to healthy and necessary cells.

Basically speaking, the poison and burn methods of cancer treatment do what they are supposed to do: they kill cells. While the medical establishment may have the best intentions, the treatments themselves have only the death of cells as their intention. They are indiscriminate, killing healthy and unhealthy cells alike. It’s all a calculated risk, hoping to kill more cancerous cells than healthy cells, trying to kill the illness before it kills the patient.

Far too many people diagnosed with colon cancer, as well as any other form of cancer, are led to believe that these are the only available treatment options available. This simply isn’t true. While a physician may be truly interested in providing the best available options to their patients, in many instance they have their hands tied by the medical establishment.

It is for that reason that every patient needs to take responsibility for their own treatment and healing. Resources abound for the patient who has a burning passionate need to heal themselves. A doctor has been to medical school and possesses highly specialized knowledge, but they do not automatically know everything. Realizing this, and acting on that realization, is the best chance a patient has for truly healing colon cancer.
